Job skills are the knowledge and skills used to correctly and successfully perform a certain activity within the workplace.

They are those skills inherent to a person that allow distinguishing two workers who, even having the same degree of academic or technical preparation for a position, act differently.

Types of job skills

Among the skills most sought after by the personnel selection areas of human resources companies and consultancies, are the social and professional skills that allow creating a good work environment and increasing the productivity of workers:

Social or soft skills

Are those job skills related to the interpersonal, intelligence, and personality of the individual tending to facilitate work, interaction with others, and improve individual performance.

It is important to develop this type of skill because, it allows better management of work stress, helps to improve interpersonal relationships, creates a collaborative work environment, etc.

Professional or hard skills

They are the skills or technical skills that are required to develop certain activities within a company. The knowledge obtained through undergraduate and graduate academic degrees, courses, or training programs are decisive in the personnel selection process.

Here are examples of soft skills and hard skills:

Social or soft skills :

  • Effective communication: communication is a social skill of great importance, mastering it improves personal and work relationships. Developing active listening skills and empathy with others paves the way for more effective communication.
  • Creativity: it is one of the most sought after skills. Companies need people who can solve problems, through new ideas and concepts, that are generated in different areas of the organization.
  • Collaboration: all members of a team are responsible for the results obtained, therefore cooperation and mutual help are essential to guarantee its success.
  • Critical thinking: the development of critical thinking allows us to address problems in a consistent and systemic way, reflecting on preconceptions, beliefs, and thoughts that often condition our perception of reality.
  • Initiative: making decisions or acting without waiting for instructions to do so is a highly requested skill by organizations, because it reflects the character and potential of that person.
  • Adaptability: it is important to be able to adapt one’s behavior, providing the necessary versatility to situations that require it.
  • Productivity: one of the most important soft skills for a company is that its employees can achieve sustainable results by performing the requested tasks in the agreed time, in a more efficient way, and exceeding the minimum standards.
  • Emotional intelligence: developing EI allows us to recognize our emotions (positive and negative) while also identifying those of others. By detecting them, we can exercise control that regulates our emotions in the social context.
  • Leadership: having people capable of encouraging, motivating, and influencing the behavior or way of thinking of work teams is key to the execution of a company’s projects.
  • Responsibility: the functions of the job must be assumed, complying with the obligations it demands. Likewise, responsibility also passes through the way we interact and communicate with others.
  • Organization: being organized allows you to systematically have an order that leads to having a more structured personal and work life, promoting certain emotional stability.
  • Concentration: developing the ability to pay attention only to the task or activity that is being performed, increases personal productivity and improves the quality of your results.

Professional or hard skills :

  • Computer technology: having knowledge of the use of various technologies is essential to have a chance to work in a company. The management of management information systems as well as other digital tools is essential in an increasingly globalized world.
  • Language management: mastering two or more languages ​​is essential for professional development in a company.
  • Design: being skilled in the use of digital design tools has become a very important hard skill in an increasingly virtual world.
  • Marketing: this discipline studies the behavior of different markets and consumers and seeks to create value for the company’s current and potential customers.
  • Project management: the development of this skill includes the administration, planning, coordination, monitoring, and control of all the activities and resources assigned for the execution of a project.
  • Web and mobile development: creating websites for the internet is another of the hard skills required. The website with various functionalities (electronic commerce, internal chat, virtual tour, among others) is the company’s virtual window, which is open 24 hours a day to the public in the digital world.
  • Finances: the management and optimization of the cash flows of a company are vital for its operation and survival. Its functions include making payments, collection management, investment placement, obtaining financing for various activities, etc.
  • Spreadsheets: the use of graphic tools, Excel-like calculation tables, is essential when applying for a position since they are used for data analysis in all areas of an organization.
